neuropathy program · Ann Arbor, MI

Numb, tingling or burning feet, and nobody has explained why.

The neuropathy program at Lazar Upper Cervical Chiropractic starts by measuring your nervous system, then looks at nerve function and circulation, without adding another prescription.

If you live with burning, tingling or numbness in your hands or feet, you have probably tried medication already. You may have been told it will keep spreading, and that the goal now is to slow it down.

Many people were given a name for it, not a cause. "Idiopathic" means the cause wasn't found. Once a condition is named without a cause, the conversation usually turns to managing it, and most of what is offered quiets the symptom without looking at nerve function and blood flow.

Here we look first. If we can help, we'll tell you. If we can't, we'll help you find someone who can.

  • Measured first. Scans of your nervous system and your posture, before anything is decided.
  • Gone over with you. Dr. Lazar or someone personally trained by him will go over your results with you, in plain words.
  • A daily routine at home. Clinical-grade equipment and nutritional support, checked at every progress visit.

know where you stand

The six stages of peripheral neuropathy

Neuropathy tends to change over time. Knowing where you are now gives you, and us, a reference point.

  1. Normal

    Full sensation. No pain.

  2. Early onset

Tingling or burning in spots. Pain that comes and goes.

  3. Progressing

Tingling, burning and pin-prick pain, more often.

  4. Mid-stage

Symptoms spread. Restless legs may start, and sleep can suffer.

  5. Late stage

Severe pain, trouble walking and with balance, and more numbness.

  6. Final stage

Marked loss of feeling, sores that are slow to heal, and a higher risk of serious foot complications.

Seeing yourself in stages 2 to 4? There is still nerve function to protect, and that is worth knowing early.

where we start

You feel it in your feet. That isn't always where it starts.

At the top of your spine, where your head meets your neck, the atlas sits around the brainstem, the busiest relay point in your body. When the atlas shifts out of position, it can put pressure on the place where signals to and from your hands and feet are routed.

A nerve conduction study checks whether the nerve in your leg conducts. It is a good test, and it answers the question it was designed to answer. It doesn't look upstream.

That is why every visit here follows The Lazar Method™, always in the same order: measure, identify, clarify, correct, restore.

How The Lazar Method™ works →

A scan taken along the spine
  • INSiGHT scans. Thermal, muscle tone and heart rate variability readings of how your nervous system is working.
  • PostureIQ™. How your body shifts under gravity, down to the millimeter.
  • Digital X-ray. The alignment of the upper neck itself, when it is indicated.
Good to know: Scans are decision support, not a diagnosis. Dr. Lazar or someone personally trained by him will go over your scans and images with you. What the scans measure →

the neuropathy program

Three aims, one coordinated program

The program puts the emphasis on nutrition, targeted supplements, clinical-grade technology and doctor-directed equipment you use at home.

Support nerve function

Calm the irritated nerve pathways behind the burning, tingling and numbness, and support the signal between your feet and your brain.

Support circulation

Healthy nerves need blood flow. Each part of the program is chosen to support circulation to tissue that has gone without it.

Get back to your life

The aim is the one you came in with: your balance, your independence, and planning your day around something other than your feet.

Whether the program is part of your care is decided from your own scans, after Dr. Lazar or someone personally trained by him has gone over them with you.

not guesswork

Why the program is built this way

Clinical-grade equipment

Every device and supplement is clinical grade or physician formulated.

Grounded in published research

Each part has been studied on its own for nerve health, circulation or balance. The studies are listed below.

Layered by design

Light, vibration, electrostimulation and nutritional support are used together, each one supporting the next.

Consistency counts

The parts build on each other with daily use. That is why every patient in the program gets a daily tracker.

your daily routine

Eight parts, used together every day

Four devices, one topical and three nutritional supplements, on a schedule set by our office.

Electrostimulation · 30 minutes a day

NeuroStim

A warm-water hand and foot bath that carries a gentle microcurrent, used to support communication along the nerves.

In a randomized trial, 15 of 18 people (83%) using daily home electrostimulation reported fewer symptoms, compared with 38% on a sham device. Kumar and Marshall, Diabetes Care, 1997

Near-infrared light · 15 minutes a day

LED boots

Near-infrared light delivered to the feet and lower legs, used to support circulation and nerve health.

In a review of 2,239 patients' records, the number of foot test sites without feeling fell by 66% after near-infrared light. Harkless and others, J Diabetes Complications, 2006

Low-level laser · 15 minutes a day

Nerve Beam cold laser

A low-level laser aimed at the small blood vessels that feed nerve tissue.

In a laboratory study in animals, low-level laser widened small arteries and markedly increased their blood flow. Maegawa and others, Lasers Surg Med, 2000

Whole body vibration · 15 minutes a day

Quake Plate

A vibration platform you stand on, used to support blood flow, balance and muscle activation.

In a randomized trial in nursing home residents, six weeks of whole body vibration cut the Timed Up and Go test by 11 seconds on average. Bruyere and others, Arch Phys Med Rehabil, 2005

  • NeuroCreamTopical support, twice a day
  • RebuilderNerve support capsules, 2 a day
  • PowderCirculation support, 1 scoop a day in 12 oz of water
  • Oral dissolvable filmDaily nerve support, 1 a day

the evidence

What published research has found

Each part of the program has been studied on its own. Here is what those studies found, in plain words, with the source for each, including a result that was mixed.

78%

fewer falls in a retrospective study of 252 older adults whose foot sensation improved after near-infrared light in a clinician's office and at home.

Powell, Carnegie and Burke, Age and Ageing, 2006

66%

fewer foot test sites without feeling, in a review of 2,239 patients' records after near-infrared light.

Harkless and others, J Diabetes Complications, 2006

83%

of people using daily home electrostimulation reported fewer symptoms in a randomized trial, compared with 38% on a sham device.

Kumar and Marshall, Diabetes Care, 1997

6.2 to 2.5

average pain score, out of 10, with percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (fine needles) in a randomized crossover trial. The sham did not change it.

Hamza and others, Diabetes Care, 2000

11 seconds

faster on the Timed Up and Go test after six weeks of whole body vibration, in a randomized trial in nursing home residents.

Bruyere and others, Arch Phys Med Rehabil, 2005

Mixed

In a placebo-controlled trial of four near-infrared visits, sensation and some qualities of pain improved, but pain intensity did not differ from placebo.

Swislocki and others, J Pain Symptom Manage, 2010

These findings come from studies of the individual technologies (near-infrared light, low-level laser, whole body vibration and electrostimulation), not from studies of our own patients. Individual results vary. The program sits alongside your medical care for diabetes or circulation, never in place of it.

questions

What people ask before they start

More answers about cost and insurance are on the FAQ page.

"Do I have to stop my medication?"
No. Never change a medication without the doctor who prescribed it. The program sits alongside your medical care, and it never replaces care for diabetes or circulation.
"Is this only for diabetic neuropathy?"
No. People come to us with neuropathy linked to diabetes and without it, including neuropathy called idiopathic, meaning no cause was found. Your scans show whether we can help.
"How long is the program?"
The home routine is built around 90 days of daily use. Your progress is checked at every progress visit, and your program is updated from what we see.
"What does it cost?"
Your first visit is the complimentary consultation with PostureIQ™, a $251 value for new patients. Nothing about care is decided before you have seen your own scans. If Dr. Lazar finds you need a plan of care, it is quoted in full, in writing, before you decide anything, and interest-free payment options up to 18 months are available for those who qualify.
"Who goes over my results?"
Dr. Lazar or someone personally trained by him will go over your scans, your images and your progress with you, in plain words.
"Can I start with a question instead?"
Yes. Text NEUROPATHY to (734) 274-5107 for the free neuropathy guide, or book a 15-minute Clarity Call. Nobody will ask you to commit to anything.
